South Devon & Channel Shellfishermen, the organisation representing the majority of local fishermen, will this year showcase the work of their members and a little of their heritage at Crabfest, in a fishermen’s store on Island Street. Don’t miss:

1. A condensed version of the Hallsands Anniversary exhibition which was shown in the village in 2017, telling the story of the loss of a local fishing village to the sea and the effect that had on the local community.

2. Willow crab pot making demonstration by the talented Sue Morgan, who also happens to be the wife of a local crab fisherman. Through research, writing and practical demonstration, Sue hopes to pass on the knowledge to keep the tradition alive for generations to come. 3. Salcombe Stained glass by Sarah Cardew, wife of a local crabber. Sarah draws inspiration from her local environment, creating stained glass masterpieces, including crab, lobster and the famous Salcombe yawl. Her work is available to buy all year round, from Coves Quay Gallery in Salcombe and she also takes commissions. For more information, get in touch via facebook.

4. South Devon and Channel Shellfishermen turns 50 this year and the organisation has been working with a community company called Storylines to collect and archive individual stories of fishing in days gone by. A small selection of images of ‘shellfishing stories’ – to compliment those that are on display in Salcombe Maritime Museum for the 2018 season – will be on display in the store during Crabfest.
